Global Technology Summer Analyst

What I liked

During my time at Bank of America, I was able to complete a project with another intern that is still being used by the team. Working on such a meaningful project gave me experience in the type of work I might be doing in the future. Also, my manager was incredibly helpful and a great mentor.

What I wish was different

A couple things I wish had been different were the pace of my project and the number of women not only on my team but in my division. For a good chunk of the first month, a lot of what I did was figuring out what I needed to be working on. So, my project wasn't completely finalized until the beginning of my second month there. Also, there were no women on my team, which would have been nice to have more for support.

Advice

Take initiative on projects. If you find something that can be added to a project that you are working on, ask and try to implement it because if you don't do it, then no one else will.

Global Technology and Operations Analyst

June - August 2019 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

Working in a team that ensured I was not just individually learning, but making a contribution to the team. I was slowly brought on, working with individual team members identifying what I might want to work on for the summer. As I got comfortable, I was able to go to anyone for help or advice, or even to grab a cup of coffee. Beyond just my day to day work, the networking during and outside of the day allowed me to get a feel for the bank as a whole, and truly understand if it's somewhere that I want to start my career.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had become more involved in the activities outside the bank. I was so focused on completing tasks and setting up meetings that I put the other events the bank hosted as not priorities.

Advice

When you're not doing work specifically for your team, make an effort to reach out to anyone in the bank. As an intern, you're encouraged to get to know the bank as best as possible to see if you want a career there, and there's no better way to learn that then speaking with people who have been in your shoes.

Financial Advisor Intern

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I learned a lot, the advisors I worked under kept me in the loop about prospects I had found myself. This meant that I got to see and be apart of the process when some of my prospects became clients. I learned a lot about financial planning and the process that Merrill Lynch goes through to acquire and keep clients. I also learned a lot about researching potential prospects and creating lists to acquire them.

What I wish was different

Cold-Calling was a major part of prospecting and I wish I had more experience face to face with clients.

Advice

A Merrill Lynch internship opens a lot of doors for those looking to get into finance. The advisors are very kind and always wiling to help and give career advice. It is a great learning experience and should you decide that Financial Advising is not the job for you there are numerous other opportunities within the company. This internship will connect you with a lot of professionals in the industry and should you choose to pursue another profession, the advisors have great connections and are very willing to write you a letter of recommendation or refer you to a professional in your area of interest.
