LifeMoves

Nutrition Intern

June - August 2022 • San Mateo, CA

What I liked

The experience of working with children who are homeless over the summer is very rewarding. Meeting all types of people and learning their personalities and stories really opened up my worldview. Walking into work every morning was a joy as I got to see the excited happy faces of the kids. The people I met working alongside me also gave me lifelong friendships and knowledge about patience and life.

What I wish was different

I wish the program was longer, 7 weeks working at the site and with the kids was not long enough! It was a very bittersweet moment the last week working with them and watching some of the kids exit the program. I also wish I gathered more memorabilia from my time there.

Advice

Have fun! It's stressful at times, but it's also summer camp. Make sure you are passionate and the kids will have fun alongside with you, making it seem less like work you have to do.

Children's Nutritional Services Intern

June - August 2019 • Menlo Park, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed that the staff at LifeMoves were very intentional and cared about us as individuals. They poured into us and made us feel really valued. We were not just interns but we were part of the team. It was amazing working with a team that really cares about empowering our community. I got to see first hand the incredible work that LifeMoves is doing, and it was such a blessing to be part of it.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have scheduled a meeting with the staff at the headquarters. They were always happy to hear from us, but I had to hurry to my second job after my internship. An internship is really what you make from it. Beside that, I had an amazing experience at LifeMoves.

Advice

I would advise anyone to chose wisely where you want to intern. It's a lot of hours and most are unpaid. My experience at LifeMoves was amazing because they have the same heart for the community as I do.

I wish there were more opportunities to do outreach/ work at the sites, maybe like once a week.

Advice

Be prepared to work 8 hour days. Come into work enthusiastic and full of energy. Be prepared to learn new skills.
