University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) at Sacramento State is seeking a Design Manager for Union WELL, Inc. The Union Well, Inc. is an auxiliary of Sacramento State and is a California 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation.  The corporation consists of the facility operations and programs of two buildings: The WELL (Recreation & Wellness Center) and The University Union.  The WELL, totaling approximately 150,000 square feet, houses three fitness studios, a cardio suite, two fitness floors, a multi-activity court, four basketball courts, a rock climbing wall, four racquetball courts, an indoor running track, locker rooms, and a conference center.  The WELL is also home to Student Health and Counseling Services. The University Union facility, totaling approximately 220,000 square feet, currently houses food service operations, retail operations, multiple meeting and conference spaces, Associated Students, Inc., Student Organizations and Leadership offices, Women’s Resource Center, PRIDE Center, KSSU Student Radio, Public Information Desk, Games Room, Union Gallery, Terminal Lounge (music/video digital media), Student Computer Lounge, Meditation Room, computer and printer workstations throughout the building, a University Police Service Center, and various open lounge spaces. RATE OF PAY: $5,720 - $7,121 per month

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 

This is a full-time, exempt from overtime, benefited position, covered under the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. Continued employment in this position is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the employee, and either University Enterprises or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

 

The selected candidate must furnish proof of eligibility to work in the United States. University Enterprises, Inc. is not a sponsoring agency (i.e. H-1B Visa). 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related field or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience.
  2. Demonstrated professional experience in the graphic design field with thorough knowledge of the production and print processes of graphic design.
  3. Demonstrated professional experience with the design, layout, and implementation of final artwork into a visual product, including ability to conceptualize and storyboard ideas.
  4. Demonstrated extensive professional experience working with Apple MacIntosh computers and peripheral devices such as scanners, printers, and digital cameras.
  5. Demonstrated professional experience in creating computer illustrations and video presentations and in performing digital image manipulations and techniques.
  6. Demonstrated extensive experience and proficiency with graphic design software, including Adobe Creative Suite.
  7. Demonstrated extensive experience and proficiency in industry standards of design, content management software, web publishing, and related web-based programs.
  8. Demonstrated exceptional oral and written communication skills, including accurate English usage and exceptional proofreading and editing skills.
  9. Demonstrated extensive experience with the principles of print design, typeface, color, layout, and production techniques.
  10. Must possess good time/project management skills for working in and meeting deadlines in varied and hectic environments. Demonstrated ability to coordinate, and establish project production schedules, work independently with little direction, and coordinate many different tasks, determining the importance of each, setting deadlines and completing projects accordingly.
  11. Demonstrated ability to coordinate a fully functioning design studio, including budgeting, scheduling, and overall design strategy.
  12. Demonstrated supervisory experience, including the training, management, and active direction of staff.
  13. Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of research and to develop ideas for the design, layout, and preparation of printed materials. Demonstrated ability to write and edit material on a variety of subjects.
  14. Must be free from color blindness.
  15. Must be legally eligible to drive in California, complete and pass an online training course, maintain a good driving record, and be acceptable for vehicle insurance coverage under the University Enterprises insurance plan. Must continue to meet the established driving standards, driving record will be monitored with the California Department of Motor Vehicles to ensure compliance.
  16. Must pass a background check, which may include fingerprinting. Must continue to meet the established standards.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s Degree in Graphic Design or related field.
  2. Graphic design experience on a college or University campus.
  3. Demonstrated photography skills.
  4. Demonstrated experience with digital video editing software.
  5. Demonstrated experience using After Effects, motion graphics software.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

With or without a reasonable accommodation: Sit for extended periods; frequent movement; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office/design production equipment including computers, scanners, printers, telephones, copiers, laminators, and digital cameras.

Work is performed in an office environment; continuous contact with staff, campus community and the public.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for the smooth operation of the Design and Visual Communication unit as a whole. This position is the creative lead responsible for initiating, supervising, providing, and maintaining the workflow and production of all graphic design services such as posters, static and digital displays, fliers, websites, directional signage, brochures, video, advertisements, and other marketing/public relations and promotional materials for the facilities, programs and departments throughout the Union WELL, Inc., including those of the University Union and The WELL. This position reports to, and receives general direction from, the Director of Marketing for Union WELL, Inc.  This position directly manages the employees of the Design and Visual Communication unit, including several full-time graphic designers, student interns, and student employees. This position also works directly with other professional and support staff of Union WELL, Inc.

 

The specific duties and responsibilities are as follows: 

  1. Manages, and is ultimately responsible for, all creative and work output produced by the Design and Visual Communication unit for the various facilities, departments, services, and programs of the Union WELL, Inc.
  2. Responsible for the unit’s supplies, purchasing, equipment, inventory, budgeting, accounts receivable, and accounts payable in all areas.
  3. Manages all Design and Visual Communication employees, including several full-time graphic designers, student interns, and student employees throughout the unit, including those doing print production and distribution work. Leads the hiring and completes performance appraisals for full time staff, design interns and student assistant positions within the unit. Provides daily training and development opportunities.
  4. Administers the Design and Communication Services project management system. Assigns and supervises project workflow, develops historical files on design projects, implements scheduled data archiving, and interfaces with staff who submit design and production requests.
  5. Reviews all of the unit’s work for accuracy, spelling, punctuation, grammar, consistency, format, and spacing.
  6. Responsible for on-campus distribution of printed posters and banners for all Union WELL, Inc. programs and services and maintenance of a-frames and other posting locations. Interfaces with appropriate campus entities (e.g., Student Organizations and Leadership, Facilities Services) to secure any permissions needed and to stay compliant with established posting policies.
  7. Assists in providing guidance for overall interior design the University Union and The WELL, including signage, wall colors, carpet, furniture, signage, overall building identity, and presentation.
  8. Manages the permanent art collection of the University Union and The WELL, including purchasing of artwork, display, and inventory.
  9. Assists with, and often manages, special projects as assigned by the Union WELL, Inc. Executive Director, University Union Director, Director of The WELL, and the Director of Marketing, relating to marketing, design, or art functions for Union WELL, Inc.
  10. Represents the Design and Visual Communications unit in contacts with the campus community, the public, and others connected with the services provided by the Union WELL, Inc.
  11. Maintains professional relationships with both on and off-campus vendors, as well as other University departments and operations.
  12. Researches project assignments, develops ideas and design comprehensives, and produces final products or campaigns consistent with the initial research or supplied event information. Establishes project parameters, materials, production schedules, and project costs.
  13. Coordinates and schedules printing and vendor services in the preparation of final products. Performs press checks and approves final copy before the commencement of printing production runs.
  14. Responsible for the ongoing design of the University Union, The WELL, and corporate websites.
  15. Responsible for the design and maintenance of the digital signage content throughout all of the Union WELL, Inc.
  16. Directly designs, develops, and creates design collateral as needed to complete work in a timely fashion.
  17. Maintains the integrity of the Union WELL, Inc. brand and is responsible for establishing and maintaining graphic design style guides for the Union WELL, Inc. Ensures that all visual aspects of collateral involving the brand are consistent with established quality and identity standards, including those governing the use of the University’s logotype.
  18. Responsible for creation and advancement of the unit’s annual project list and goals.
  19. Other job-related duties as assigned.
