Public Speaking & Debate Coach (Part-Time)
Jubilate Education – Torrance, CA 90503
Compensation: $25+/hour (negotiable based on experience)

Jubilate Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing STEM education opportunities to students in our local South Bay, is seeking an experienced and passionate Public Speaking & Debate Coach to improve our curriculum, lead courses, and mentor our team to greater success in local, regional, and national tournaments.

Position Overview:
The Public Speaking & Debate Coach will be responsible for improving and updating our current curriculum for public speaking and debate, leading engaging and challenging courses for students at various skill levels, and mentoring our debate team in preparation for competitions. This individual will create a positive, dynamic, and results-driven environment, and will play an instrumental role in the growth of our team both in and out of the classroom.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess and improve the current curriculum for public speaking and debate to ensure it aligns with the latest competition formats, trends, and best practices.
  • Create a comprehensive and engaging course plan that develops students' speaking, critical thinking, and argumentation skills.
  • Design instructional materials, exercises, and assignments to reinforce concepts and strategies for various competitive speaking and debate formats.
  • Integrate real-world issues and current events into the curriculum to keep students informed and prepared for debates on a wide range of topics.
  • Lead courses for students ranging from beginners to advanced in public speaking and debate.
  • Teach foundational skills, including speechwriting, argument construction, extemporaneous speaking, delivery techniques, and critical thinking.
  • Provide targeted coaching to help students refine their skills in specific areas such as persuasion, structure, rebuttal, and audience engagement.
  • Foster a positive learning environment that encourages active participation, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Serve as the primary mentor for the debate team, providing guidance on both competitive strategy and personal development.
  • Work with individual students to help them identify areas for improvement and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop team strategies and assist students with preparing for debates, including research, practice drills, and refining speeches.
  • Motivate and inspire students to push their limits, develop confidence, and embrace the challenges of competitive speaking.
  • Guide and prepare students for local, regional, and national speech and debate competitions.
  • Work closely with school administration, parents, and colleagues to communicate goals, expectations, and achievements.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma required
  • Proven experience in competitive public speaking and/or debate as a coach, competitor, or judge.
  • Strong understanding of various public speaking and debate formats, including but not limited to Policy Debate, Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum, Parliamentary, and individual speaking events.
  • Previous experience designing or improving curricula for public speaking or debate programs is preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage both classroom instruction and extracurricular activities.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and develop students, regardless of their skill level.
  • Proficiency in the use of technology for virtual coaching, video analysis, and research.
