  1. Register for the Correction Officer Exam: Open enrollment for exam #5301.

  1. Prepare for the Process: Review the attachments and information below to understand the steps involved:
  • Eligibility: You must be at least 17 ½ to take the exam, and 21 to be hired (no maximum age limit).

 

  1. Ensure You Meet Requirements: To be appointed, you must have:
  • Driver Learner’s Permit (Driver license required to graduate from the academy)
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • One year of work experience
  • US Citizenship
  • One year of any job experience.

 

After passing the written exam, you'll proceed through:

  • Medical Exam
  • Physical Fitness Test
  • Background Investigation
  • Psychological Assessment
  • Orientation

Things to Know Before You Apply

Before applying to take an exam for a city job, there are a few helpful things you should know.

 

Paying the Exam Fee and waivers:

You can pay the exam fee online with a major credit card, bank card, or prepaid debit card. You can also pay the exam fee at one of our testing centers with a money order. Exam fees can vary depending on the exam. Under certain circumstances, the exam fee may be waived.

 Non-CIN Fee Waiver

Other Fee Waivers are available for those meet the following conditions. You must be:

  • unemployed; or
  • eligible for Medicaid; or
  • receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments; or
  • receiving Public Assistance in the form of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance; or
  • certified eligible for Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act programs through state of local services agency.

Documentation to support your Non-CIN Fee Waiver claim for one of the conditions above must be submitted by mail or in-person no later than the end of the application period for this exam.

CIN Fee Waiver

To qualify for a CIN Fee Waiver, you must be a New York City resident who is receiving full benefits (Cash, Medicaid, and Food Stamps) and not partial benefits for Public/Cash Assistance.

Enter your Client Identification Number (CIN) in the space below as it appears on your New York State Benefit Identification Card.

Applicants Who Are Military Veterans or Active Service Members:

In New York City, eligible and qualified United States Armed Services Veterans can:

  • Get exam fees waived. Fee waivers may be used an unlimited number of times, and on all exams. Learn more about waivers in the OASys FAQ.
  • Apply to receive Veterans’ or Disabled Veterans’ Preference credits which can be added to the final score for a test taker who achieves a passing score on civil service exams.
