Emerging Technologies Associate, Library

Position Summary

NYU Shanghai Library is seeking a Emerging Technologies Associate to join our Research and Instructional Technology Services (RITS) unit. Embedded in the NYU Shanghai Library, this unit supports innovation and emerging technology integration in teaching, learning and research at NYU Shanghai. The unit also works closely with its counterparts in NYU New York and NYU Abu Dhabi.

 

The Emerging Technologies Associate will focus on cloud-based development, using related approaches and methods. Overseeing the smooth operation and hosting of the online learning platform. Develop educational A.I. (LLMs / Chatbots) applications through API integration and cloud or local hosting. The purpose of the position is to assist with innovative engagement, emerging technologies, and to facilitate the development of rich immersive mobile and web content within the Mini Course online course initiative at NYU Shanghai. The Developer helps in the design and implementation of UX and interactivity within course content and will work closely with the RITS Digital Studio team. The Emerging Technologies Associate oversees student workers and interns towards maintenance and development of local solutions. A key supporting role of the position is to work closely with the Library team and faculty in the pursuit of custom solutions to innovative teaching and learning initiatives. Ability to work to deadlines and provide professional documentation for the upkeep of RITS assets, servers, applications and accounts. The position will oversee related server and backend technologies as well as ensure relevant sites are smooth running and accessible to users.

 

The main responsibilities include:

 

Technology integration and coordination (50%)

  • Coordinate with NYU Shanghai faculty on the integration of instructional technologies, aligning with emerging trends in technology application in higher education, such as AI;
  • Provide comprehensive support and consultations on new and existing tools and technologies, facilitating faculty adaptation and utilization;
  • Collaborate with NYU IT and other stakeholders in coordinating and conducting technology pilot programs, ensuring efficient administration and effective implementation of instructional and research technology-related services;
  • Engage in continuous learning and adaptation to rapidly implement innovative technologies and methodologies in instructional settings.

Development (30%)

  • Work closely with IT staff, UX designers, and Instructional Technologists in design and development of teaching and learning solutions;
  • Assist in the integration of front-end and back-end components of online solutions;
  • Assist in the technical planning of local technology related projects;
  • Determine, develop and document software specifications throughout the production lifecycle; Maintain suitable online repositories and histories of technical solutions;
  • Ensure security, availability and responsiveness of tools and services.

 

Others duties (20%)

  • Assist in the management of RITS services and spaces such as XR, Interdisciplinary Digital Research Lab and other interactive teaching spaces.
  • Stay current on emerging development technologies, tools, and methodologies.
  • Assist in administrative duties of RITS.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education

  • Degree in a related field (CS, Information Science, Instructional Technology etc.) or 2+ years post graduate experience in relevant institution working with emerging technologies.

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient in both written and spoken English and Mandarin;
  • Outstanding communication skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups including faculty, staff, and end users within an education environment;
  • Well-organized, diplomatic, detail-oriented, and service-oriented;
  • Good problem-solving skills and time management skills;
  • Up-to-date experience with programming, technology, and emerging trends, particularly in AI and its implementation in education;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment;
  • Self-starter who is flexible and open to new challenges;
  • Willingness and ability to rapidly adapt and implement new technologies and methodologies.

 

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with teaching and learning practices in higher education;
  • Experience with VR and AR technologies;
  • Portfolio of relevant work or examples required at the time of application;
  • Familiarity with innovative use of technologies in the creation of online learning and platforms.
