Software Engineer Intern - Robotics

Are you a talented and self-motivated problem solver looking to gain hands-on experience working on a variety of challenges in an exciting field?

We are seeking a passionate Software Engineer Intern to join us at Onki, a robotics startup dedicated to creating the most human-centric robots, designed to understand, react to, and support the complex spectrum of human needs and emotions in public spaces.  You will work closely with the founding team, which consists of former senior managers from top-tier tech companies and unicorn startups.  

As a Software Engineer Intern (Hardware/Robotics) at Onki, you will have the opportunity to work on hardware design, testing, and integration for our robot control systems. This internship will provide hands-on experience in developing and integrating software for hardware components and expose you to leading algorithms used in autonomous robot navigation and human facial and gesture recognition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of navigation and control algorithms for RoboCap units.
  • Design and develop software for integrating SLAM radar, stereo depth camera, and other hardware components on the RoboCap base platform.
  • Conduct testing and debugging of hardware-software integration to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Participate in the development of automated testing tools and frameworks for the robotic systems.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide regular updates on project progress.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java or C++.
  • Familiarity with algorithms and data structures.
  • Experience with software development tools and version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Understanding of basic robotics concepts and sensor integration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proactive attitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with autonomous mobile robot system design and SLAM-based navigation algorithms.

Knowledge of open-source software development kit for robotic applications (e.g., ROS 2).

Familiarity with facial and gesture recognition using open-source frameworks such as MediaPipe and TensorFlow. 

 

The program requires a minimum commitment of 30 hours weekly (up to a full-time role based on availability, for a minimum period of 12 weeks starting in early June.  Flexible start date and work hours, with the possibility of extension. 

The internship will prepare you for a greater role in our small and rapidly growing company.
