Sustainability Data Scientist

Spare-it is a data driven waste reduction engagement platform. We compute waste streams to engage employees with live data in fun reduction competitions and become a true catalyst for sustainability in their workplace.

Spare-it is based in Greentown Labs (Somerville, MA) and recently closed its Seed funding. Spare-it is looking to expand its technical team in order to further leverage the data it captures with a fleet of hundreds  of connected sensors to track waste streams. 

Data Scientist roles and responsibilities 

The Data Scientist will participate in the processing of data captured by our sensors, to optimize the waste system’s operation, enable relevant comparisons and benchmarking between customers, and extract insights to inform our customers decision on their sustainability policies.

In collaboration with the Technical Team, s/he will:
  • put in place an infrastructure to perform analytics on our sensor’s live data, and other data provided by our customers
  • leverage this infrastructure to perform the following functions:
  • detect anomalies in the waste measures
  • evaluate the impact of specific interventions
  • compute rankings between different teams/sites/companies
  • propose methods to standardize data across customers to enable for comparison and benchmarking
  • evaluate ML to build a model enable to predict the impact of specific waste management initiatives
  • propose new ideas on ways to leverage the data we have access to

The ideal candidate will have a passion for data and sustainability, driven by the difference s/he can make for the planet with a mix of the following personal and professional characteristics:
  • knowledge of AWS cloud environment
  • experience with data analytics tools (R / Python)  and ML frameworks
  • experience with Agile/SCRUM methodology
  • experience with IoT devices and stream processing is a plus
  • driven by human values such as trust, transparency, respect, and kindness
