C&O Canal National Historic Park Towpath Crew - Potomac, MD

Program Dates: 9/12/22 - 3/10/23
Schedule: Monday - Friday 6:00 am - 3:30 pm (A Week)
Monday - Thursday 6:00 am - 3:30 pm, Friday off (B Week)
Pay Rate: Weekly allowance: $550

Transportation and Site Locations: Members must provide their own transportation to and from the maintenance shop at the Palisades, Maryland site. The Palisades shop is located at; 11710 Macarthur Blvd Potomac, MD.

Position Description: Members will support the C&O Canal maintenance staff with routine daily activities along the towpath. This crew will be based out of the Palisades maintenance shop in Potomac, MD. The three members will work alongside an SCA crew leader. Primarily, this project requires SCA members to remove vegetation from historic stone culverts, locks, flumes, abutments, walls, and any other historic stone structure within the park boundaries that the NPS deems the need for vegetation removal. This crew will assist the NPS staff with the removal of fallen trees in the park and along the towpath. In addition, members will support projects related to carpentry, masonry, and GIS mapping. If members do not already have basic first aid and CPR training, they will receive this training during the program.  Members of this crew may receive chainsaw certification- dependent upon the capacity of NPS staff to host the training.

If the position is successfully completed, member will earn the Public Land Corps (PLC) Hiring Authority giving them eligibility to apply to merit vacancy announcements within the Federal Government for two years.

Conditions of Employment
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to provide proof of up to date vaccination against COVID-19. Per CDC guidance, up to date vaccination now includes all recommended COVID-19 vaccines, including any booster dose(s) when indicated. For example, if someone has completed the primary series but is not yet indicated for a booster shot, they are considered up to date. Once a person is indicated for a booster (6 months after Pfizer or Moderna primary series, 2 months after J&J primary series), full and up-to-date vaccination includes the completed booster shot.
