Research Assistant

About Kogan Communications: Eugene B. Kogan, Ph.D. ’13 (Brandeis Graduate School of Arts and Sciences), owner of Kogan Communications—an education and training consulting firm—seeks 2-3 outstanding students to assist with background research on negotiation, mediation and crisis leadership. Current projects include Power Dynamics in Mediation and Negotiation; John F. Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis; John Lewis and Civil Rights. Working remotely, research assistants will, among other tasks, assist Dr. Kogan by locating and summarizing articles and book chapters, identifying sources, and transcribing video passages.

What research assistants will gain: Conducting research under Dr. Kogan’s guidance, students will gain a unique view of pivotal events in modern history. From the most dangerous moment (the Cuban Missile Crisis) to the most consequential moral movement (Civil Rights campaign) in the last century, they will help investigate the role of leaders acting courageously during crises. The insights will be invaluable for their careers and lives as they navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with original historical documents, students will develop the skills of patience and fastidiousness that employers everywhere strongly value. Along the way, Dr. Kogan will offer career advice and mentorship, enabling his research assistants to broaden their professional networks and make productive connections.

What’s required: Impeccable attention to detail (e.g., proofreading of submissions) required. Must have experience using Brandeis Library—in particular, databases (JSTOR, Academic Search Premier, WorldCat) and Interlibrary Loan.

Funding / credits: Hours per week are negotiable depending on the students’ schedules. The position is unpaid, and students must secure either (a) external funding or (b) BUS89 / INT89 credit. Students who are interested in conducting this research during the summer are encouraged to apply for the World of Work (WOW) Fellowship by April 10

To apply: Interested applicants should submit a one-page resume and cover letter and submit application through Handshake.
