Please note: The selected candidate will receive a $4,500 stipend funded by the Louis D. Brandeis Legacy Fund for Social Justice WOW. WOW program requirements will apply. For more information on WOW requirements, visit Hiatt's WOW Funding page.

The National Consumers League seeks a motivated intern who wants to work with a nonprofit advocacy group. The League is a national membership organization that identifies, protects, represents, and advances the economic and social interests of consumers and workers on issues including telemarketing and Internet fraud, food and drug safety, and fair labor standards. The intern will assist NCL program staff with ongoing projects and research. A National Consumers League internship provides the following areas of experience:

  • Because the League performs research in complex issue areas, interns deal directly with federal agencies and in some cases Congressional staff. They also attend Senate and House committee hearings, national conferences and public interest coalition meetings.

  • The League's staff is small and interns are an integral part, working closely with program directors, providing input at staff meetings, and keeping project files up-to-date.

  • The League requires from its staff and its interns a high level of oral and written communication skills. Interns are frequently called upon to write brief reports for NCL staff to provide background information on various issues.

Consumer issues cover a broad range of concerns. Additional issues NCL monitors include: health care, child labor; e-commerce; developments in regulatory agencies (particularly the Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration and Department of Labor); telecommunications; privacy; and financial services and credit.

We ask that interns make a minimum time commitment of ten weeks, spending at least 35 hours per week working at the League. Work hours per week are flexible for longer-term assignments. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the internship will be virtual. Our goal is to tailor your internship to suit your specific needs. The League will consider the particular interests of applicants and will develop specific projects, if needed, for class credit.

Students interested in pursuing the NCL internship should upload the following documents to Handshake later than 11:55pm on Wednesday, February 28th:
  1. Resume
  2. Cover letter
  3. Writing sample
  4. Letter of recommendation (optional)
