Research Assistant (remote)
Learning from Workers: Resilience in the Time of the Pandemic

Project Background: The Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies (HCPDS) in Cambridge, MA, is seeking an undergraduate student research assistant to provide support for a research project concerning the well-being of frontline workers in the context of COVID-19. This longitudinal qualitative study explores the impact of the current health care crisis on low-wage workers and their workplaces in three different industries – health care, warehouse, and retail – where we have already collected pre-crisis baseline interview data on worker well-being. In the second wave, we are returning to these workplaces to evaluate how organizations and workers have responded to the pandemic. The project is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is being led by Harvard Chan School professor, Lisa Berkman.
The Work: The research assistant will join a team of RAs assisting Project Director, Meg Lovejoy, with qualitative data analysis (coding and memoing), possibly some interviewing, and literature reviews for the development of peer-reviewed manuscripts. The position will start in mid-January 2021 and run through the end of May 2021, and will involve 8-10 hours of work per week. All work will be done remotely, with regular team check-ins.
What We Offer: We offer a competitive hourly rate and flexible hours. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in qualitative methods, work and well-being, inequality, organizations, social change and/or public health.
Who We’re Seeking: We are looking for candidates who have a strong interest in one or more of the aforementioned topics and in qualitative research, with a strong preference for candidates majoring in a social science. Prior experience or course work in qualitative methods is also a strong plus.
How to Apply: Candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to Laura Price, Deputy Director, HCPDS, at lprice@hsph.harvard.edu. Please put “Workplace Project Application” in the subject line.
