MassGIS is the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ mapping office. MassGIS develops, maintains, updates and distributes geographic information, technology, data and services for use by state agencies, municipalities and the public. We maintain a statewide database of GIS data and make it available through on-line mapping tools and via web mapping services. We also provide geospatial analysis services. MassGIS has recently completed developing (and now maintains) the mapping and data used by the state’s Next Generation 911 emergency call routing system.

MassGIS seeks an internship student who:

·      Is a Junior or Senior undergraduate student
·      Has completed at least two GIS-centered classes and has experience with ArcGIS software
·      Ideally has used GIS software as part of other coursework

The internship student would work on one or more of the following depending on MassGIS’ priorities and specific interest and aptitude of the co-op student:

·      Prepare maps to assist MassDOT Survey Section surveyors with finding photo identifiable points we want surveyed as part of ortho QA.
·      Baseline structure editing/update
·      Parcel QA
·      Update of statewide GIS data. For each data set being updated, the work would involve developing detailed familiarity with the data, particularly its attributes; the attribute data are likely to be the focus of much of the work
·      Develop map services for publication on ArcGIS On-Line (AGOL)
·      Add features to existing base mapping services published at MassGIS
·      Special projects TBD.

Each of the above provides substantive opportunities for developing and expanding the co-op’s GIS skills and knowledge. Additionally, the internship student will gain exposure to MassGIS web mapping services, NG911 support, and general experience with EOTSS and Digital Services.
