Substance Use Disorder Outreach (SUD) Coordinator
This position joins Oregon Health Authority’s statewide AmeriCorps VISTA team placed at the Multnomah County Health Department. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team meetings, and support from OHA VISTA team leaders and project director. With the vision of “thriving communities that nurture the health and resilience of all,” MCHD’s mission is “We work with communities to advance health access, protect the most vulnerable, and promote health and wellness for everyone.” As the local mental health authority and community mental health program, the Behavioral Health Division (BHD) provides and coordinates recovery-based mental health and addiction services, spanning prevention, early intervention, and treatment to Multnomah County's adults, children, and families. The Behavioral Health Wellness and Prevention program is dedicated to reducing the harms that gambling, and the use of legal or illicit substances have on our community at large. We focus on strategies and initiatives that will increase our community’s overall resilience and protection from those harms. The OHA AmeriCorps VISTA Partnership Project is committed to developing the public health workforce to strengthen our impact on Oregon communities. We value applicants who bring lived experience. Member Duties: The AmeriCorps member will reduce substance use among youth in Multnomah County by: Expanding prevention campaign messaging to be culturally inclusive and reach communities most vulnerable to substance use. Campaigns include KEEP IT SAFE which focuses on securing substances at home and Rethink the Drink which focuses on reducing alcohol consumption; Collaborate with Big Village Coalition to coordinate events and conduct youth outreach to increase participation in events. The Coalition works to reduce youth substance abuse through education, engagement, and advocacy. Members serve Oregonians through indirect service and capacity building, meaning the work you will do is the behind-the-scenes work. While programs developed endure for years, you will have limited interaction with the community. Ideal applicants will have familiarity with substance use prevention models; experience working with youth or community organizing; and interest in multi-sector community collaboration.
