Field Representative
Job Summary
The Field Representative serves as the Member's community representative for issues and programs within their assigned portfolio, including monitoring and updating the Member and District Director on important local issues, emerging trends, and critical developments. This position also acts as a liaison to the federal, state, and local governments, as well as different agencies on behalf of the Member. Additionally, the Field Representative works with the Constituent Service Director and the broader field team to ensure effective communication with agencies and constituents.
Essential Duties
- Acts as the representative for the Member within his or her area of responsibility including answering casework correspondence, meeting with constituents and community groups, verbal communications with constituents and community groups, attending community events including staffing a booth and serving as a liaison with federal, state, district, and local agencies to form effective relationships on behalf of the Member;
- Informs the Member and the District Director of all district, local, state and federal issues and policies in his or her assigned issue areas by screening district media sources and interacting with constituents;
- Develops and implements outreach planning events, including developing events and meetings for the Member’s congressional district recess periods;
- Prepares in advance materials for the Member’s district recess and coordinates with District Director and the legislative/communications staff including but not limited to memos, backgrounds, certificates and agendas;
- Staffs the Member when in the district including meeting/event preparation, note taking, photo opportunities, and follow up action items with colleagues with the office including, but not limited to, the District Director, Communications and Legislative teams;
- Collaborates and handles casework assignments as
- Acts as a liaison to and notifies the appropriate media when the Member will be in the liaison’s area and works with the Member’s Scheduler and Press Secretary to ensure appropriate media participation;
- Assesses casework for problems requiring legislative action and makes recommendations to the District Director and Chief of Staff/Administrative Assistant;
- Monitors scheduled district meetings for the Member with constituents;
- Screens and refers cases, when appropriate, to other district offices;
- Trains and supervises Staff Assistants, including interns, to handle office matters such as logging incoming and outgoing correspondence, handling visitors, telephone calls, and computer operations;
- Assists in logging all incoming and outgoing mail and incoming telephone calls relating to casework;
- Prepares periodic reports for the District Director and district activities in his or her assigned issue areas;
- Maintains up-to-date files on all portfolios cases and categories of information of importance to the office;
- Meets attendance requirements as established by the office;
- Maintains a good working relationship with the Member, staff, and constituents;
- Accepts performance based criticism and directions;
- Works well under pressure and handles stress;
- Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights, and weekends; and
- Assists with member transportation, including to local airports such as LAX, ONT and John Wayne.
- Submits monthly administrative documents such as but limited to, mileage, compensation hours and franking/ mailing reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Education and Experience
Preferred Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
Preferred Experience
- Experience developing a community relations strategy for a Member of Congress, elected official, or Federal agency is preferred
- Familiarity with local communities in Member's district and/or state is preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish or Mandarin
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This position is located in an office setting that is adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. The work involves carrying of items such as books, papers, and small office equipment, canopies, tables and chairs. The incumbent must be able to meet minimum physical requirements (e.g., lifting, bending, crouching, standing, etc.). Physical Requirements and work environment are subject to reasonable accommodations.
Other Requirements
- Must successfully complete a criminal history records check
- U.S. Citizen by US Law
- Must have a vehicle to drive the Representative to events, including travel days to airports in SoCal region
- Must have a well running vehicle with a Class C driver’s license, insurance and good driving record.
