Job Purpose
The Program Dog Trainer oversees the implementation of UnChained's Dogs In Residence program by preparing for, leading, and managing program activities for dogs and youth.
Job Importance
Program Dog Trainers support and guide Youth Trainers to teach dogs basic skills, good manners, and self-confidence using only fear-free, positive reinforcement methods. They also teach basic care and Health & Wellness skills to Youth Trainers to support dogs living in the juvenile detention facility. The Program Dog Trainer's leadership has a direct impact on youth participants' personal growth and the program dogs' improved chances for adoption.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Program Dog Trainer performs a wide range of duties, including:
- Work closely with Management to recruit, interview, hire, and supervise Program Assistants.
- Attend all team meetings and trainings.
- Collaborate with UnChained staff and volunteers to update and improve curriculum and training materials.
- Work closely with support staff to implement lesson plans for youth.
- Support the social-emotional learning goals of youth through lessons and discussion.
- Participate in the selection and evaluation of dogs for the program.
- Direct and assist in the safe handling of dogs on youth campus for program purposes.
- Work alongside youth, volunteers, and program staff to ensure mastery of dog training skills, Health & Wellness care, and personal growth.
- Provide feedback to volunteers and/or staff on program effectiveness.
- Communicate regularly with faculty/staff of youth and animal organizations regarding program goals, outcomes, concerns, and successes.
- Complete case notes at each visit.
- Coordinate closing activities for each 12-week training session.
- Assist in staff trainings, as required.
- Act as liaison between UnChained and partnering agencies.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum two years' experience training dogs using fear-free, positive reinforcement methods.
- Excellent understanding of dog behavior and communication, including positive reinforcement, counter-conditioning, and desensitization.
- Strong knowledge of dog-related topics such as cognition and learning theory, breed stereotypes, dominance theory, and safe behavior.
- Excellent public relation skills, including public speaking.
- Teaching or training experience at any level desired.
- Ability to lead and motivate people with minimal supervision.
- Ability to multi-task with dogs and youth simultaneously.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- No criminal history preventing work with youth.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working or volunteering with underserved or at-risk youth.
Accountability
The Program Dog Trainer is hired by the Management of the organization and reports directly to the Interim Executive Director, who is responsible for performance evaluations.
Position Details
- Part-time position.
- Reports to UnChained's Interim Executive Director.
- Works on-site at Monterey County Juvenile Hall and remotely via personal computer.
