Strategic Communications Intern

OVERVIEW OF POSITION

Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid). Minimal travel is required. Job Type: Part-Time (up to 20hrs/week), Non-Exempt Compensation: $20 per hour

The Strategic Communications Intern will support the organization's communications efforts by assisting

with content creation, media outreach, and digital strategy. This position is ideal for a student or early-

career professional interested in storytelling for social change, community engagement, and strategic

messaging.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist in developing and scheduling content for social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube, etc.)

Draft and edit written content, including blog posts, newsletters, press releases, and website updates

Support internal communications efforts by preparing announcements, staff updates, and briefing

materials

Conduct media research and track news coverage related to the organization’s mission and campaigns

Help maintain communications calendars, databases, and media contact lists

Contribute to the design and layout of digital and print materials using Canva or similar tools

Support storytelling initiatives, including gathering quotes, photos, and stories from staff, partners, and community members

Attend team meetings and take notes, capturing key messaging and follow-up actions

Assist with event promotion, registration, and digital engagement

Perform other communications-related tasks as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Requirement:

Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program in communica-

tions, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field

Availability to work up to 20 hours per week on a hybrid schedule (some in-person availability in

Washington, DC)

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Proficiency with social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, X)

Demonstrated interest in social justice, environmental sustainability, or community development

Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines

Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working independently or as part of a team

Knowledge of content creation tools (Canva, Google Suite, etc.)

Preferred:

●  Strong writing, editing, and research skills

●  Familiarity with social media strategy and tools

●  Proficiency in Canva or Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign and Photoshop, is essential

●  Experience with WordPress is required

●  Ability to navigate Buffer effectively

●  Familiarity with MailChimp or other email communication platforms

●  Understanding of Meta analytics

●  Interest in racial equity, climate justice, youth leadership, or economic inclusion
