REU Researcher

May - July 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

The head of the program and his colleagues were great, the pay was good, Dr. Andrew Forbes was incredibly easy to contact and quick to reply, the other students selected were friendly. The program divided students into labs based on their interests, and my mentor (Dr. Forbes) was more than happy to try research that fit my interests but was outside his field. The support for the work was phenomenal as well. Iowa City is a great location set aside from the typical agriculture regions of the state, with plenty of summer events and festivals, art, hangout spots, and interesting travel destinations within a few hours of travel, or more often less, for weekend trips.

What I wish was different

With the program being its first time, it exceeded my expectations entirely. The only thing I might change is some mentors had their students work on their projects which were loosely based on the students' interests but may not be necessarily be a good fit.

Advice

Just apply everywhere you can! Cast a wide net so you don't put all your eggs in one basket. You'll have better opportunities and can then choose and save yourself stress from worrying about being selected to then being the selector. I almost didn't apply to this program because I applied to others, but I loved my experience this summer.

Marketing Intern

February 2019 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I loved the team I worked with. I made so many new friends! I also really just liked the overall experience and getting the opportunity to see what it was like to work in a sports environment

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been given more responsibilities. The majority of the time I was just given odd jobs and busywork, and I would have liked to have had opportunities to make a greater impact behind the scenes doing digital work

Advice

I would say go above and beyond what you are asked to do. Don't do the bare minimum. You will be rewarded for your hard work.

Office Assistant

May 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience I gained by working on campus and working with various offices. I worked in the Orientation and Academic Retention office so I was able to learn about two different departments. It gave me a deeper insight into the University. I was able to work over the phone with students and also worked with faculty, which helped me create and strengthen intrapersonal relationships.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to communicate with students in person more often than over the phone. Since I have continued to work in this office since the summer, most students have been in the office. But I think talking in person is much more different than simply talking over the phone.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share with this experience is for students to put themselves out there! I would have never gotten this job if I had not made the decision one evening to apply. I had applied on a whim because I was considering staying in Iowa City for the summer, and it turned out to be the best decision I have made during my time at Iowa so far.

Resident Mentor

June - August 2018 • Iowa City, IA

What I liked

I liked working with the participants of the Upward Bound summer program and forging relationships with them

What I wish was different

I wish that I had done better with building more friendly relationships with my coworkers. We remained at a professional level.

Advice

Pay attention during training, engage with everyone around you and try to learn as much from them as possible. You won't know how difficult and fun it's going to get so just take a few breaths and take it all in. Also schedule time for self-care! It is tiring looking after other people.
