Advice

Network, always! It is one of the most important takeaways and a key to success in a large corporation or really any! People sooner assist others when they have an understanding of who you are.

What I liked

I loved the opportunity to have hands-on experience designing real products in my field. My team was very encouraging and supportive of my growth, and I felt like a valued team member.

What I wish was different

Advice

There was definitely a steep learning curve at first, so make sure you dive in and learn as much as you can. I was surprised how quickly I caught on and how much I learned in such a short amount of time.

Sales intern

May - August 2019 • Holland, MI

What I liked

The company is going through restructuring after hiring a new CEO last summer, so it was exciting to be an intern during a time where a lot was changing! The sales internship consisted of a project that lasted the entirety of the summer. It was more of a research/analytical role than selling, but I did learn a lot about the company and its products and the furniture market as a whole.

What I wish was different

Although my work team leader gave me and my colleague a lot of autonomy, it was focused on only a small subset of sales. I wish we had the opportunity to go into our dealers and witness the entire sales process!

Advice

Businesses are always looking for fresh perspectives on their operations. Don’t be afraid to apply to many different internships and not pigeonhole yourself into just one category.

I would say that students should take advantage of the openness of the team! Speak to as many people as possible and volunteer to help out with side projects if allowed. It's a great way to expose yourself to areas of interest and expand your mindset.

I liked the good pay that I received.

What I wish was different

I wish they did a better job of keeping the work consistent, often we would either go home early, or work lots of overtime.

Advice

It's hard work, and not for everyone. You need to be able to keep up physically, as well as being mentally aware of everything else that's going on.
